Accessibility

Statement prepared: July 23, 2026

The National Taxpayers Union Foundation wants everyone to be able to use the State Tariffs Tracker — including people who rely on assistive technology. Accessibility is part of how the Site is designed and built, not an afterthought.

Our standard

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, the standard referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice in its web-accessibility guidance, and we track WCAG 2.2 as it matures.

What we've done

  • Semantic HTML structure with proper headings, landmarks, and labels throughout;
  • Charts carry text alternatives (ARIA labels describing what each chart shows), and every figure shown graphically also appears as text on the page;
  • Interactive elements — forms, dialogs, navigation — are keyboard-operable, with visible focus and appropriate ARIA roles (dialogs trap focus and close with Escape);
  • Color is never the only carrier of meaning, and text contrast targets AA ratios;
  • Pages are fully functional without JavaScript for reading content (a text index of all states backs the interactive map);
  • The Site respects reduced-motion preferences and uses no auto-playing media.

Conformance status

The Site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 AA: most content fully conforms, and we review new features against the standard as they ship. We conduct periodic reviews and prioritize fixes for any barrier that blocks access to the Site's core information.

We aim to respond within five business days, and if content is inaccessible to you we will work to provide it in an accessible format.

Compatibility

The Site is built to work with current versions of major browsers and screen readers (including VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS) on desktop and mobile devices.
