Methodology & sources
The State Tariffs Tracker is published by the National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF). State-level estimates are prepared for NTUF by Trade Partnership Worldwide, an economics consulting firm specializing in trade data, and are updated quarterly, the same day new government trade data is released.
What the numbers measure
Statutory tariffs are duties set in law through the normal legislative and trade-agreement process. Executive tariffs are additional duties imposed by presidential action. Figures estimate the additional tariff costs paid on imports into each state, based on state-level import composition; they are estimates, not customs receipts attributable to individual taxpayers.
Underlying data
Estimates draw on U.S. government trade statistics — including national- and state-level import data published by the U.S. Census Bureau and tariff and duty data published by the U.S. International Trade Commission — combined with the applicable executive actions in effect during each period.
Update cadence
Each quarter's figures are published the same business day the underlying data becomes available. Data currently covers December 2023 through Q2 2026.
